4 Reasons How the Sharing Economy is making the World a Better Place

Standard

It was 2012 when Joseph Garner set out on a one month social experiment to test the good will of society using only Craigslist. His documentary: “Craigslist Joe” didn’t win an academy award, but it did provide insight into a new class of consumption using new technology and social networking. Joe’s experiment revealed that community still exists, that technology hasn’t isolated us or caused us to be distrusting of one another. In fact, his documentary exposed that there is a sense of community and real – life human interaction in the age of technology, an adapted version that incorporates old school values in a new-age society.

The sharing economy has been around since the mid-2000s but the tipping point is now. In 2011 TIME Magazine named ‘collaborative consumption’ “One of 10 ideas that would change the world.” Mahatma Gandhi would be so proud!

The first time I used the ‘sharing app’ Airbnb was in September 2014. I was visiting Santa Monica and wanted the experience of living like a local. I chose accommodations that were central to all of the amenities and cheaper than a hotel room! While I was there I learned about Uber, a car service that picks you up for a fraction of the price of a cab. Uber to the airport cost me 18 dollars whereas the cab from LAX into Santa Monica was 40! Both of these services are a part of the new social enterprise, a Peer 2 Peer Network that is making the world a better place! Below are 4 reasons how:

1. People are spending less and experiencing more: For sharing websites like Airbnb or VRBO, you can book affordable accommodation (often cheaper than a hotel) AND experience life as a local. Staying at someone else’s house is not for everyone, but it sure beats eating out all of the time. I shopped at the local grocery store and cooked most of my meals at the house I was staying at. I saved a lot more money that way and it ensured that I was sticking to my healthy eating plan.

2. We are increasing our green footprint: I don’t own a car because I really don’t need one. However, there are times when a car would come in handy. For trips to the grocery store or having to be somewhere outside of transit’s access hours I use Car2go, a ride-sharing company that uses the same concept as ZipCar and MODO. Car2go takes their business a step further and allows the user to drive to a destination and leave the car there (as long as it is a designated parking space). ZipCar and MODO also have designated parking spaces but the user must return the car back to its original parking spot. Gas prices are included in your trip’s mileage fees.

3. Users are cutting down on wasteful consumption: Reduce, Reuse, And Recycle. This also falls under the category of being environmentally friendly, but we live in a 1st world society where we sometimes think that new is better. Do you want a new phone? Or do you NEED a new phone? Post the old one on Ebay, Craigslist, Kijiji, or Facebook Marketplace because your old phone will be new to someone else! You can sell it and make some extra money toward that new phone or you can just give it away to someone in need. It’s really up to you.

4. Together we are helping to build democratic communities: A strong community is a safe community. By participating in collaborative consumption we are working to decrease societal barriers, by increasing acceptance of one another and calling the shots on how we want to live, where we want to live and how we make our money.

The Bachelor Season 18

Standard

“Don’t slap the hand that fed you.” Catherine Lowe said exactly what I was yelling at the TV in ‘After the Final Rose’ of the Bachelor last night.  Juan Pablo had foot in mouth syndrome throughout the entire show, some of his famous words were mocked in the media and discussed in the ‘women tell all’ segment so it should have come as no surprise that the arrogant Juan would dis Hollywood like he did. He might have been trying to make a statement, but he is fighting a losing battle! And what is Nikki thinking? This reality TV couple will join the likes of Spencer and Heidi Pratt in loserville. As far as I’m concerned Nikki and Juan Pablo had better hire good publicists because dissing Hollywood on live TV was just plain stupid. I bet that in a few months we will hear Juan Pablo back peddling, although he will NEVER apologize he will make some attempt to explain himself to get the media off his back because this situation will only get worse. This is ultimately what he wanted, right? To rid of the camera’s and live a ‘normal’ life? Maybe he should have been more assertive and respectful in his delivery if that was his intention, or did us all a favour and turned down the Bachelor in the first place!!! and Nikki? WTF? She didn’t even try to make it better; she just sat there with a smug look on her face allowing this douche bag to disgrace her and ‘the process’ on national television. To be fair, I don’t know what happened behind the scenes that made these two show their true colours, but I do know that in my 40 years of being on this planet Integrity goes a long way and being true to yourself does not mean shitting on others! I hope that Juan Pablo and Nikki learned this lesson after watching their behavior on TV because I know Hollywood thinks “IS NOT OK”. I’d watch my back….

Inspiration at a funeral

Standard

I went to a funeral last Thursday for a very special man.  I haven’t been to a funeral in years let alone a church. Funerals are sad, but can also be inspiring.  As I looked around the church, I saw so many people that I haven’t seen in years. These people were once a part of my life, and some of them still are.  Good memories of years gone past flooded my thoughts and I felt happy, not sad. ‘Henry’ brought good people together. This does not surprise me, and I don’t know why this came to me as a revelation but it did. I respected this man, not because he was a successful businessman but because he had a good value system. He earned the respect of others by instilling his values in his work and believing in himself and others.  Many of his values live on in the staff, the team he built that made his business one of the best places to work in Vancouver. In that moment of revelation, I did not fear death. I felt inspired to continue to work on myself and be the best that I can be. I felt happy and lucky to have made such wonderful friends and acquaintances over the years, and most importantly to have known Henry.

The Best, The ONLY.. peanut butter you should buy

The Best, The ONLY.. peanut butter you should buy

It’s like heaven in my mouth. No, seriously! The moment that Earth Balance Coconut and Peanut Butter touched my taste buds, I was addicted. Much like Brangelina, coconut and peanut butter have an undeniable chemistry. Two healthy and respected foods married into one creamy, flavorful and scrumptious spread. A little taste of Thailand on toast, it’s really too much to handle!

I first heard of Earth Balance from a vegetarian friend who has done tons of research on foods and vitamins and is a dedicated animal activist. Taking her advice, I purchased the soy-free buttery spread and was very pleased with the creamy taste and the fact that it was dairy-free. So when I haphazardly came across the Coconut and Peanut Butter Spread, I just HAD to try it. I love it so much that it deserves a shout out, and so does Earth Balance.

Earth Balance describe themselves as an ‘organic-minded’ company. Originating in Colarado, the company uses products that are 100% plant-based, vegan, non-GMO, lactose-free, gluten-free, egg-free, casein-free, and have 0g of trans fat. And guess what else?  Earth Balance is committed to health and environmental responsibility.  I will continue to buy these products, not only because they taste so fabulous, but because of what they stand for. Eat good, feel good, do good.
